Grächen lies at 1620 m above sea level on an extensive sun terrace high above the Zermatt valley among an impressive Alpine panorama. 49% of the community's 14 km2 area is covered with coniferous forest.
The traditional Valais mountain village was first documented in 1295 and has around 1,300 inhabitants of whom 75% live directly or indirectly from tourism.
The town offers 7,000 guest beds where approx. 300,000 overnight stays are spent each year
