Weather and climate in Grächen
Grächen is located in the driest region of the entire Alpine area. The Bernese and Valais Alps form a natural barrier against disturbances from the Atlantic or the Mediterranean.
The numerous sunny days and the foehn intensify the drying out of the soil. Between 1960 and 1990, the average annual precipitation in Grächen was 52.3 cm, and 50 percent of all days were cloudless. Between 1901 and 1940, 56 cm were measured, most of which fell as snow, as summer precipitation (May to August) amounted to only 20 cm at that time. With average January temperatures of minus 4.2°C, average July temperatures of plus 13.8°C and an annual average temperature of plus 4.6°C, Grächen has an exceptionally mild climate in relation to its altitude.
Since 1861, Grächen has been home to a small weather station of the Swiss Federal Observatory, which measures air pressure, temperature and humidity three times a day. Grächen thus had one of the first measuring stations in Valais. Until recently, the mountain village was considered to have the lowest rainfall in the whole of Switzerland. However, recent studies have shown that the hamlet of Ackersand at the bottom of the valley in the neighboring municipality of Stalden receives even less precipitation on an annual average.
